Class A, Group II Geto-Dacian Monetary Imitations. Page 4
M37. Obverse type of Q. Titius, reverse type of Pub. Crepusius, after 82 BC; cf. Cr-341/1 (O) and 361/1 (R), 2.92g. Both sides somewhat stylized; somewhat blundered but recognizable reverse legend.
M38*. Types of C. Annius (mismatched), after 82 BC; cf Cr-366/1 (O) and 366/4 (R), 4.55g. Both sides slightly stylized; traces of reverse legend; accurate reverse control number.
M39. Types of Pub. Crepusius, after 82 BC; cf. Cr-361/1, 4.52g. Both sides quite stylized, somewhat blundered but recognizable reverse legend.
M40. Obverse type of Pub. Crepusius, reverse type of various moneyers, after 82 BC; cf. Cr-361/1, obverse, cf. Cr-282, reverse; 4.62g, serrate. Somewhat stylized head of Apollo; somewhat stylized warrior in biga, remnants of legend below. See M322 for a very similar obverse die; surely the product of the same engraver, working from the same model; not especially the obverse O on both.
M41. Obverse type of C. Annius with L. Fabius Hispaniensis, reverse type of Q. Titius, after 81 BC; cf. Cr-366/1c, obverse, cf. Cr-341, reverse; 3.70g. Stylized bust of
Anna Perenna, scales under chin misinterpreted as XXI; long, apparently meaningless legend behind (but see introduction); slightly stylized Pegasus on reverse. The reverse shows clear signs of being overstruck, possibly on an earlier imitation.
M42. Types of C. Poblicius, after 80 BC; cf. Cr-380/1, 2.63g, serrate. Both sides stylized and crude; crude but accurate obverse legend, with retrograde control E; somewhat blundered but recognizable reverse legend.
M44. Types of C. Naevius Balbus, after 79 BC; cf. Cr-382/1; 3.51g, serrate. Both sides very sketchy; remnants of SC behind Venus' head, no other legend.
M43. Obverse type of Mn. Fonteius, reverse type of M. Cipius, after 85 BC; cf. Cr-353 (O) and 289/1 (R), 3.62g. Stylized Apollo head and biga; blundered, meaningless reverse legend.
M45*. Obverse type of C. Naevius Balbus, reverse type of Pub. Crepusius, after 79 BC; cf. Cr-382/1 (O) and 362/1 (R), 3.77g. Stylized Venus head, barbarous horseman; blundered, meaningless reverse legend.
M46*. Obverse type of C. Naevius Balbus, reverse type of Ti. Claudius Nero, after 79 BC; cf. Cr-382/1 (O) and 383/1 (R), 3.43g. Both sides somewhat stylized; blundered but recognizable reverse legend, with accurate control number XXXX.
M47. Obverse type of C. Naevius Balbus, reverse type of Q. Antonius Balbus, after 79 BC; cf. Cr-382/1 (O) and 364/1 (R), 3.69g, serrate. Both sides somewhat stylized; somewhat blundered but recognizable reverse legend. Would be classified as Copy if types were properly matched. This coin combines the two most popular prototypes into a single coin, the only such piece of which I'm aware.
M48. Types of C. Naevius Balbus (reverse uncertain), after 79 BC; cf. Cr-382/1, 3.10g. Both sides barbarous; traces of abstract, meaningless reverse legend.
